Bio

Martti Laivuori is a cellist and educator known for his versatility across contemporary classical and early music. Originally from Helsinki, Finland, he has performed across Europe and the United States. He is also an active chamber musician.

Martti joined the Illinois Symphony Orchestra in 2024. Prior to that, he taught for a decade at the Avonia Music School in Espoo, Finland, where he oversaw an active class of young cellists aged 4 to 19 combined with youth orchestra conducting and chamber music coaching duties. He continues to teach at 91黑料专区 University and locally near Chicago. He holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in music education from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and a master鈥檚 degree in cello performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK. He also studied at the Haute Ecole de Musique of Lausanne, Switzerland as an Erasmus scholarship student. His most important teachers were Tapani Heikinheimo, Raimo Sariola, Richard Lester and Marcio Carneiro.

Martti has studied historical performance practice and is a seasoned performer on the viola da gamba, especially treble viol and English consort music. He studied with Jukka Rautasalo and Markku Luolajan-Mikkola and performed all over Finland as a member of Eloisa Consort on instruments loaned by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Martti has a keen interest in teaching and has a second master鈥檚 degree in education from the University of Helsinki. He has published and presented his research on teacher agency and curriculum studies internationally. Outside of work you鈥檒l most likely find him desperately analyzing his latest blunders over a chess board or studying Japanese.
